However, painting your guitar isn't as easy as just taking a brush with paint to the body of the guitar. I’ve read online that with alder there’s no need to grain fill prior to sealing/priming/painting due to the tight nature of alder’s grain.

In the majority of cases, i have found at least 3 coats will ensure a nice finish. Then when dry lay the guitar flat. That will take away some complication.

Use a block of wood in the pickup and/or control cavities to suspend the body an inch or so above the work area. Your decision should depend on how prominent the grain is in the alder (some alder bodies have reasonable grain patterns showing), and what you find aesthetically agreeable. You’re going to want to work over the entire body of the guitar with a medium grit sandpaper (120 grit) and go back over again with the entire body and use an even finer grit of paper (220 grit).

Once done, leave the guitar body and neck to dry as per the manufacturer’s recommendation on the finishing product. Please read our article on sanding a guitar body prior to painting. As with any wood however, preparation is absolutely fundamental to achieving a good result.

When spraying hang the guitar from a hook. From there, you can apply a coat of sealer, base color, and finally a clear gloss coat that will make the finish shiny. Painting alder is an easier process.
